Spooky Launch Week : Premium Video Quality
Hey, Phil from Mux here
with a quick demo
of how you can use
our new premium video
quality feature
to build
high end video experiences
for your viewers.
Let's take a look.
When you upload
a video to Mux,
you get the choice
of three different
quality levels:
basic, plus, and now premium.
While Mux already leverages
AI-driven per-title
encoding
to make sure that your videos
always look great.
We wanted to make sure
that you could also tune
the quality targets
of every video or live stream
to make sure that
the encoding best matches
the value of your content.
So let's say you're
a sports broadcaster
licensing video
from both a tier
one sports league
as well as a minor league.
You're probably
want to leverage
premium video quality
for your high end events,
where your minor league
events are fine
with the plus quality level.
Selecting the right video
quality level for your use
case is an important
trade off,
as the costs of each level
are different.
For example,
using premium costs about one
and a half times as much as plus.
While you still
have the option
to use a basic level
for other videos,
that includes free encoding.
Let's take a look at some low
and high complexity content
that we put through both
plus and premium,
and take a look
at the differences
between them.
Let's take a look
at some relatively low
complexity content first.
We've got this little video
of Moo Deng here,
just chilling out on a rock.
There's not a lot going on
in this video.
There's some fine detail,
but other than her
shaking her ear
a little bit of water
in the background,
there's not a lot
of complexity,
not a lot of motion,
for example.
The adaptive bitrate ladder
we've selected for this
video ranges
from 0.7 megabits
up to 5.4 megabits,
and it's got four rungs on it.
If we take a look at this
same video
with the premium
encoding level,
we'll see that obviously
all the bitrates are higher,
but we've also got
that premium
1080p rendition
as well at a higher bitrate
to maintain as much of that
fine detail as possible.
Let's take a look
at some high complexity
content. Here
we've got this lovely
little video of a waterfall,
but there's a lot
going on here,
a lot of motion.
That water
is incredibly complex.
Water is actually
one of the most
difficult things to encode well.
You'll see, even compared
to the low
complexity content,
the bitrates are higher on
plus because we've detected
that complexity
and applied
a much more appropriate
bitrate ladder.
But if we look
at the premium version
of the
same high complexity content,
you'll see the bitrates bump
even higher
because we're trying
to maintain
as much of that
perceptual quality
that's embedded in that video
as possible.
And again,
you see that
second 1080p rendition
that maintains
the highest possible
picture quality.
So there you have it.
The new premium video
quality level is great
when you're building
high end experiences.
Whether that's your new OTT
service starring Moo Deng,
or just the new sports league
you want to stream.
You can build it on Mux.
